Where apparatus aims to establish your relation with the PhD programme and with the regulatory structures that surround research, and context aims to create interdisciplinary sensibility and to cement relationships with your PhD Peers, the project components of the PhD Programme are aimed at relating these back to the individual PhD thesis project.
Course unit description
The course consists of generating a digital project archive to support development of the project literature review; visualizing the space of the research project and presenting this graphically; and planning activities that take place in the research project during the second and third semesters.
At the end of the course the student should be able to:
- Created and understood the significance of a digital archive for the research project, have an overview of such systems
- Employed existing facilities or developed new facilities for visualizing key academic aspect of the PhD project graphically
- Break a large research theme down into specific research activities and motivate the relationship between a research activity, a research object and a research question
The course consists of four workshop/seminars taking place during semester 1 and 2. The first seminar introduces the idea of the digital archive and the subject of developing a research project via graphical representation. The second and third workshops provide methods for graphical visualization and evaluate how these can be used to develop the research project.
Deliverables
- Choice of digital archiving system and establishment of digital archive for the PhD project (workshop 1)
- Visualisation of the research project space (context, significance, state of the art, disciplinary identity) via graphical means (workshops 2-3)
