Course content

The course will deal with the Norwegian cities and how their function and role has changed over the last 20-30 years. Since the beginning of industrialization there was no period with such dramatic changes in the Norwegian cities as in last few decades. Technological development, de-industrialization, infrastructure development, migration and changes within the population are some fundamental reasons for these changes. But what are the changes and how do they affect the cities? The course will conduct a comparative work with several Norwegian cities in order to understand how the urban internal structure changes and how increasing integration into larger territorial contexts change the city's role. The course will emphasize physical understanding of the processes of change, combining reading of selected literature with the elaboration of graphical representations.

Learning outcome

Students will acquire an understanding of overall urban transformation processes, train their ability to seek relevant information and the ability for critical reflection. Students will focus on developing capabilities and graphical methods to analyze and communicate physical changes.

Working and learning activities

The course consists of lectures, literature studies and search for relevant information about the various cities. Individual/alternative group works will aim at presenting diagrammatic analysis of urban structures, classification of the urban territorial functions and comparison of the processes of change in the various cities. As a part of the course students will conduct study of at least one city, and present their interpretations and findings in a graphical presentation. The work will later be integrated in an exhibition / publication
